If a New Riders' set is available as part of a Dead show, do you listen to it or pass it by?
I usually pass it by.

the only one i ever really listened to was 5-15-70 and only b/c Bob joined in on a couple unique numbers. usually i take a pass. i like NRPS a lot but i don't find their music all that rewarding in a live setting...

I used to not care that much about them, but now, if their set is available when they opened for the Dead , I get .

Even when they opened for the DEAD there was just something missing . Hard to explain but when they're in a club that's when then shine way more than a bigger venue.I saw them at the Stone Pony last year and were prefect for that setting. They're still using gear from the 70s and well it sounds like it.Garage band absolutely not , headliner also NO.But I wouldn't intentionally come late if the're opening for someonelse......LW

Pass, except for 6 Days on the Road and Lodi, if they are in the set. I don't ever seem to have the time to listen to a full GD show, let alone things like NRPS sets and US Blues encores.

Another good question to ask would be how do people feel about the current band known as NRPS that are touring these days? I think they're pretty good. And I've never really even been a big New Riders guy. But I liked them when I saw them. It wasn't change-your-life awesome, but it was fun. I saw them at a festival so they only got maybe an hour to play (that's what I dislike about the festival scene these days, lots of interchangeable bands that get shorted and stuck with 45 minute to an hour sets, not enough time to really shine). I had a staff laminate for that festival and when they got done with their set I was hanging out by the stage entrance and one of their roadies seemed to think I was a stagehand (I had the pass for other reasons) and had me carry a bunch of heavy crap. Though he was nice and gave me a NRPS magnet for my efforts.

Sometimes yes. For anyone who doesn't know it yet, the set they played at Veneta on August 27th 1972 - before the Grateful Dead's legendary show - is highly recommended.

You have to pay for it, though, as it's an official release. Worry ye not: the performances are good and the multitrack (Betty Board?) recording is faultless.

Here are two sources for downloading - get the whole album as you can't otherwise hear the blazing Willie & The Hand Jive which ends the set:
